Bifengxia Facts

Bifengxia is Chinese for "Green Peak Canyon."

The Bifengxia Panda Center is owned and operated by the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, and is a branch of the Wolong Panda Center.

The Bifengxia Panda Center was opened in October 2003 and covers nearly 400 hectares, which is about 988 acres.

Before the earthquake of 2008, Bifengxia was a small Panda Center with only 46 staff members. The emergency evacuation sent 41 pandas and the staff that care for them to Bifengxia. The facility only had 20 enclosures and had to build an additional 17 temporary structures. The Center is planning on building an additional 20 enclosures to accommodate the Wolong pandas and the 13 babies that have been born since the earthquake.

The Bifengxia Panda Center now has about 144 staff members and has taken on a new role in the survival of the giant panda. The Center is divided into 4 main areas consisting of the breeding area, bamboo plantation area, training area for pandas that will be released into the wild, and staff area. The pandas have trained staff on site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The Chinese State Forestry Administrative Bureau has invested 27.6 million yuan, which equals about $4,035,678 US to the expansion at Bifengxia and the rebuilding of the Wolong Panda Center.
